Swim, sing, picnic and celebrate Havdalah at Havurah’s Shabbat In the Pool (For All Ages!) on August 8. We will have the pool to ourselves from 5:15 to 6:15 pm, then gather for Havdalah singing, a story, and BYO picnic under the trees.
RSVP at RSVP@havurahshalom.org by Monday, July 27 with family name(s) and ages of any children so we can reserve enough lifeguards. In order to defray the major cost of the renting the pool/lifeguards, please consider making a donation of $5–$15.
The Havurah invites the community to a Sunset Dinner at Grizzly Peak Winery in Ashland; The Best of Both Worlds, on Thursday, August 27 at 6:00 PM with light jazz by the Paul Schmeling Trio. Ashland Gourmet will provide appetizers from the Middle Eastern kitchen with delights such as tabouli, hummus, baba ganoush and more, followed by an entrée from the Spanish Sephardic tradition of Chicken Marbella and dessert of fresh fruit and baklava. The all inclusive price per person, which includes the wonderful wines of Grizzly Peak, is $60, and tables of eight can be reserved for $440. All reservations must be made in advance no later than August 19 by calling 541-488-7716. The event is a benefit for the Havurah.

Please join us for a performance of selected scenes from the Yiddish silent film “Jewish Luck” (1925) with music composed and performed live by PSU Music students under the direction of 2017 Artist-in-Residence David Spear.
The silent film Jewish Luck (1925) was among the first Soviet Yiddish films to be released in the US during the 1920s. Based on Sholem Aleichem’s stories, the film revolves around the daydreaming entrepreneur Menakhem Mendl who specializes in doomed strike-it-rich schemes.
Jewish Luck features some of the finest artistic talents of Soviet Jewry during this period. The original Russian intertitles were written by renowned Soviet Jewish writer Isaac Babel, who later became a victim of the Stalinist purges in the late 1930s.
Thanks to the restoration of Jewish Luck by the National Center for Jewish Film, the moving “images” of Sholem Aleichem’s philosophical daydreamer have been miraculously preserved. A new score will allow contemporary audiences to view and ultimately “hear” this classic Russian Yiddish silent film.
