James Sherman, a Chicago actor,  brings his one-man show The Ben Hecht Show to Portland.
Friday and Saturday, Aug 24 & 25 at 8PM and Sunday, Aug. 26 at 3PM.
Ben Hecht (1894-1964) was a renowned playwright (The Front Page, On the Twentieth Century) and screenwriter (Scarface, Nothing Sacred, Wuthering Heights, Gone With the Wind)  who was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Screenplay seven times and won twice.
Less known is that Ben Hecht was an important figure in American Jewish life.  In his memoirs, Hecht describes his assimilated Jewish upbringing in Racine, Wisconsin and his growing Jewish consciousness during World War II.
He was the first American journalist to write about the European Holocaust.  He created a pageant, We Will Never Die, a memorial to the victims of the Holocaust, that was staged at Madison Square Garden and the Hollywood Bowl. After the war, he became so involved with Zionist groups that a ship carrying immigrants to Palestine was named The S.S. Ben Hecht.
In THE BEN HECHT SHOW, James Sherman portrays Hecht in an entertaining and thought-provoking 80 minute long solo show.  Hecht’s views on anti-Semitism and his explanation of his own Jewish journey are brilliantly written and incredibly timely.
