Michael W. Twitty: Kosher Soul and The Cooking Gene
Join us for our 2019 Friends of the Center Brunch, the MJCC’s biggest fundraiser of the year. Come hear Michael W. Twitty, a James Beard Winning food writer, independent scholar, culinary historian, and historical interpreter personally charged with preparing, preserving, and promoting African American foodways and its parent traditions in Africa and her Diaspora and its legacy in the food culture of the American South. Michael is a Judaic studies teacher from the Washington D.C. Metropolitan area. The Cooking Gene is Michael’s personal mission to document the connection between food history and family history from Africa to America, from slavery to freedom. Initiated in 2011, the project successfully garnered funding and significant media attention in 2012 to initiate a journey known as The Southern Discomfort Tour. Sunday Parkways @ North Park Blocks

Portland’s Sunday Parkways began in 2008, closing streets to cars and opening them to bicycles. Sunday Parkways is an annual event series that’s offered on one Sunday a month from May through September. Perfect for riders of all skill levels, these community rides let cyclists take their time and roll through the neighborhoods that make up the heart of the city.
This Sunday the route is the Green Loop of Downtown and Central Inner Eastside and goes right by OJMCHE. Come visit the museum, which will be tabling in the North Park Blocks with the Jewish Federation of Greater Portland and Mittleman Jewish Community Center. Stop by and say hi! This route inspired by the Green Loop presents a bold new concept featured in the Central City 2035 Plan that envisions a linear park connecting nearly a dozen districts. This linear park will stop by countless cultural hot spots like the Portland Art Museum, North Blocks and the Rose Quarter. It’ll be a playground for all ages.

Sept. 5, 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm, Adulting All of those questions you’re afraid to ask! (i.e., How do I make a budget? How do I manage my debt from student loans to credit? Can I save for the future now? Create a personalized financial action plan.

Nov. 3, 9:30 am -11:30 am, Transitions Planning for life! How do you financially prepare for death, divorce, losing a job, having a baby, needs of your children from throwing a bar/bat mitzvah to college, to paying for a wedding? What do you need to know about insurance? Create a personalized action plan.

Dec. 8, 9:30 am -11:30 am Retirement How do I take care of myself and those that follow me? Who should you talk to help you with estate planning? How do you prepare to avoid widow worry? 401k/IRA, insurance 101 and asset management. Create a personalized action plan.

All three locations to be determined (tbd).
