“Women in Torah”

This spring, Havurah member Alicia Jo Rabins will guide us through the complicated lives of ten Biblical women. Alicia’s Women in Torah workshop will use creativity and conversation to explore characters from Eve to Yiftach’s daughter. This is the first full-length pilot course of Alicia’s Girls in Trouble curriculum, created around her critically acclaimed Girls in Trouble song cycle (indie-folk songs about women in Torah).
A poet, violinist, and Torah scholar, Alicia created the one-woman show A Kaddish for Bernie Madoff, which she performed recently at Disjecta. Her new collection of poems, Divinity School, won the 2015 American Poetry Review/Honickman First Book Prize.
With Alicia’s expertise, we will examine these famous and not-so-famous women in ways that might inspire us in moments of struggle and in the context of our own lives. Each of the ten sessions will explore one woman and is relatively independent of the others within the overarching theme of the course.

This course is free for Havurah members, $15/class for non-members.
Havurah’s catered Kabbalat Shabbat Dinner begins at 6:30 pm, followed by a Kabbalat Shabbat Service at 7:30 pm. The dinner is vegetarian, and we offer dairy-free, gluten-free, and nut-free options. You’re invited to bring wine or juice to celebrate Shabbat. Childcare is available for kids age 2 to 8.

Whether or not you attend the dinner, we hope you’ll join us for our musical and joy-filled Kabbalat Shabbat Service. The service will be led by Rabbi Joey and Havurah musicians, and is sponsored by Havurah’s Tikkun Olam Committee, with a focus on welcoming refugees.
Tradition tells us that the heavens are most open to prayer during the Days of Awe. Our Selichot Service will be held in Havurah’s Bet HaKnesset. We will begin the process of T’shuvah, of resolving those issues that have been heavy on our hearts and minds, and of welcoming the New Year. Please arrive early and bring a pillow to sit on and a candle in a container.

Havurah Shalom invites you to our Erev Rosh Hashanah Service at the Tiffany Center, 1410 SW Morrison, in Portland. All are welcome. No preregistration, tickets or payments required.
Havurah Shalom invites you to our Rosh Hashanah Day One Service at the Tiffany Center. We will begin at 9:30 am with Shacharit for everyone and a separate Service for Families with Children 0-10 from 9:30 to 10:15 am. The Torah Service begins at 10:30 am, the Shofar Service at 11:30 am, and the Musaf/Additional Service at 12:30 pm.
Our Rosh Hashanah Service is open to all, with no tickets or payment required.
The only service requiring preregistration is the Service for Families with Children 0-10. Please RSVP here by Sept. 19 with the names of family members and the names and ages of your children planning to attend. Upbeat, brief and participatory, this holiday service is for the whole family! Enjoy stories and skits around the themes of the holiday, visuals, and lots of singing of prayers and contemporary songs.
During this season of repentance, we are called upon to do T’shuvah, to return to God in sincerity and in truth. Please join the Havurah community as we gather at Sellwood Riverfront Park to perform the Tashlich ceremony. We seek to symbolically “cast away” our accumulated sins and transgressions, so that we may purify our hearts and our souls as the New Year begins.
We will meet at Picnic Area B. Please bring something to share at the vegetarian potluck immediately following Tashlich. What to bring by Last Name: A-G Salad or Dessert/H-Z Vegetarian Main Dish. And bring drinks for yourself and your family. Havurah will provide some drinks and ice. And don’t forget the breadcrumbs!

Havurah’s Chanukah Celebration offers fun for all ages. A potluck oneg of plate-free desserts at 6:30 pm will be followed by candle lighting, storytelling, and singing led by Beth Hamon, Aaron Pearlman and other Havurah musicians.
For all who are interested, we’ll have a few tables of dreidel playing too. If you have a dreidel, chanukiah and/or candles, please bring them with you. We’ll add lots of light and laughter to the night!

We invite you to join us on Friday, Dec. 30, to welcome Shabbat, spread the light of the Chanukah candles, and share our feelings, fears, and hopes for the difficult times we are facing as a country. For those of us who came together on the Sunday after the election, it was a powerful expression of community, and there have been requests to identify some next steps. It continues to feel premature to launch a specific action plan. Instead, it seems more appropriate to gather in community, listen to how we are doing, and continue conversations about our hopes and fears about areas such as immigrants and refugees, poverty and homelessness, climate change, equity, and gun control.
We will begin by lighting the Chanukah and Shabbat candles, sing some songs, and then spend our time talking and listening. There will not be a formal Friday night service.
