Join Havurah Shalom for our Yom Kippur Services at the Tiffany Center on Wednesday Sept. 16. Shacharit begins at 9:30 am, the Torah Service at 10:30 am, the Musaf/Additional Service at 12:30 pm, the Mincha/Afternoon Torah Service at 4:30 pm, the Yizkor/Memorial Prayers at approximately 5:30 pm, and the Ne’ilah/Closing Service at 6:00 pm. Our Break Fast begins at approximately 7:00 pm. Our Family Service (for families with children 0-10) will also be held in the Tiffany Center from 9:30 to 10:15 am.
All are welcome, and no payment is required. Only the family services require an RSVP. We will begin at 9:30 am with Shacharit for everyone and a separate Service for Families with Children 0-10 from 9:30 to 10:15 am. Our Rosh Hashanah Service is open to all, with no tickets or payment required.
The only service requiring preregistration is the Service for Families with Children 0-10. Her novel alternates between late medieval Spain and Portugal during the traumatic time of the Inquisition, and a very small town in New Mexico in 1992. The modern New Mexican characters are Catholics with peculiar habits. Nobody in town eats pork but they don’t know why. It is likely they are the descendants of conversos, Jews who converted during the Spanish Inquisition. The story weaves a connecting thread from the Iberian Peninsula to Mexico City and then on to the original settlers who moved into what is now the American Southwest. Five hundred years later, a young amateur astronomer wonders about the secret of the town he grew up in: Entrada de la Luna, or Gateway to the Moon.
Morris’ previous work, The Jazz Palace, won the Anisfeld-Wolf Book Award for important contributions to the understanding of racism in 2016. She also writes short stories and travel memoirs. Her many novels and story collections have been translated into six languages. She lives in Brooklyn, New York and teaches writing at Sarah Lawrence College.
Doors open at 4:00 PM to meet and greet the author. A one-hour author reading and discussion will follow beginning at 4:30 PM. Light refreshments will be served. Admission is free.

Bridging Voices Youth Chorus & Friends

Neveh Shalom’s music program is proud to invite you to a Sunday afternoon concert featuring Bridging Voices LGBTQ+ and Allied Youth Chorus conducted by Erik Gullickson, the Rose Schnitzer Manor Choir conducted by Barbara Slader, and the Koleinu Choir conducted by Cantor Eyal Bitton.
Bridging Voices is in its seventh season as Portland’s first LGBTQ chorus for young people. They chorus has around 55 members who are between the ages of 13 and 21, making them the largest chorus in the country serving LGTBQ+ youth, their families and friends.
