Harry Glickman Award seeks nominations

The Mittleman Jewish Community Center seeks nominations for the Harry Glickman Award. Any Jewish student who has lived in Oregon for the past three years and is a junior or senior in high school is eligible. Two winners will be selected and recognized at our Community Celebration on May 12, 2021. This award was established in 2012, in honor of Harry Glickman (z”l), the “father” of professional sports in Oregon. He was the founder of the Portland Trail Blazers, the Trail Blazers’ President from ‘87-’94 and the founder of the Portland Buckaroos. He is also a member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

In past years, the award focused on scholar athletes. Due to the cancelation of high school sports from COVID-19 this year, The Harry Glickman Award will focus on academics and “community heroes.” Any high school junior or senior who has gone above and beyond during these trying times should apply. If you helped with getting food or clothing to people in need, addressed social justice issues, or participated in any form of community service, they want to hear from you.

Applicants will be judged on academic achievement as well as commitment to community service. Winners will receive a $500 scholarship for college.

Apply/nominate by April 15, 2021.
