Leonard Bernstein at 100 Exhibition @ Oregon Jewish Museum and Center for Holocaust Education

Leonard Bernstein at 100 celebrates the life and work of Leonard Bernstein (1918-1990), the great Jewish American composer and conductor who dedicated his life to making classical music a vibrant part of American culture.The exhibition features photographs, personal items, papers, scores, correspondence, costumes, furniture, and audio and video recordings. A vocal booth gives visitors the chance to sing lead in West Side Story. The exhibition is the most comprehensive retrospective of Bernstein’s life and career ever staged in a museum setting.

Curated by the GRAMMY Museum at L.A. Live ® in collaboration with The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts and the Bernstein Family. Presented in cooperation with the Bernstein Family, The Leonard Bernstein Office, Inc., Brandeis University, and the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music.

Introduction to Judaism

This 18-week course is taught by members of The Oregon Board of Rabbis, representing a variety of Jewish affiliation. A carefully constructed curriculum includes Jewish history, life cycle events, holidays, ritual and daily practice, theology, study of Torah and contemporary Jewish America. While not a conversion class, most OBR members consider it a prerequisite for students beginning study for conversion. Classes 7-9 pm, Thursdays, at rotating Portland area synagogues. This next-step-up program from Kiddush Club allows parents and kids to move into the main sanctuary while still enjoying youth-oriented activity. Families meet in the main service (Stampfer Chapel or Main Sanctuary) and youth join their friends for a fun and active lesson on the Torah portion (parsha) of the week with adult leaders. As always, we end with our community kiddush lunch!

Meet in the MAIN service (Stampfer Chapel or Main Sanctuary) for the beginning of the Torah service, and then come out with your friends for a fun and active lesson on the Torah portion (parsha) of the week. Return to the service to help lead Adon Olam, and join the community for lunch!

Sharing the Light @ Trinity Episcopal Cathedral

Join in the spirit of shared holiday traditions by attending a joyful musical collaboration between Kol Echad, Choir of Congregation Beth Israel and the Trinity Choirs, Pacific Youth Choir, Portland Chamber Orchestra, Samantha Farmilant, soprano, Helen Karloski, mezzo, William Goforth, tenor, Anton Belov, baritone and Yaacov Bergman, conductor.

The performances will be held on Dec. 21 and 22 and will feature the Christmas portion of Handel’s Messiah on Saturday, Dec. 21 at 7 pm at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral at 147 NW 19th Ave. in Portland and excerpts from Judas Maccabeus on Sunday, Dec. 22 at 4 pm at Congregation Beth Israel at 1972 NW Flanders St. in Portland.
Trinity’s annual Wassail Party follows the Saturday performance and Hanukkah treats and menorah lighting follows the Sunday performance.
