HANS COPER—LESS MEANS MORE features the sculptural work of Hans Coper (1920-1981), a radical Jewish artist of the mid-twentieth century who was at the vanguard of British studio ceramics, pushing the boundaries of clay and forms of abstraction in his work. Guest curated by Sandra Percival, founding Director and Curator of Zena Zezza, the exhibition presents nearly 50 works by Coper including his Spade, Thistle, Ovoid and Cycladic forms drawn from an extensive collection of his work in England’s York Art Gallery, a rarely seen Portland collection, and a cluster of works from collectors and California institutions. Coper left Germany for England as a Jewish refugee in early 1939. The exhibition also includes works by celebrated ceramicist Lucie Rie, also a Jewish refugee, along with a small selection of related contemporary and modern artworks. Coper was described as “gentle, yet shattering” and Less Means More opens a conversation into the complexities and contradictions embedded in his life and work.

Betty LaDuke: EARLY WORK: curated by Bruce Guenther, Adjunct Curator for Special Exhibitions, features works created in the 1960s by one of Oregon’s most internationally recognized artists, Betty LaDuke, recipient of the Governors Art Award 1993. Centered in her identity as a first generation Jewish American, the early graphic works are based on memories of the vibrant street life of the immigrant neighborhoods of New York and stories from the Jewish bible. The works form a foundation for understanding the evolution of her long career as a narrative, image-based artist driven by deep social and political engagement.

Experience Theatre Project presents William Shakespeare’s Comedy of Errors, with former CSP CEO David Fuks as Egeon. Friday and Saturday shows 7 pm; Sunday shows at 6 pm.
Free, but $10 donation suggested.
(The play will be in Dayton the previous weekend).
A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR Brenda Hubbard: Comedy of Errors is one of Shakespeare’s earliest plays and while not his most accomplished, is regularly enjoyed and produced. This is probably due to the fact that light hearted comedy has always served a function in the world. Full of charming and entertaining character types that were originally found in ancient Roman comedy and the Commedia Dell’Arte, Comedy of Errors has always been a crowd pleaser. From the crafty servants to the pompous ruler, the long suffering wife and her sister to the braggart soldier, to the romantic lovers to the lusty kitchen maid, to the quack doctor – the play makes great fun of these types of people in an improbable and light hearted way. We have capitalized on the Commedia origins in an attempt to render a physical and boisterous production full of contemporary references while remaining true to our love of Mr. Shakepeare’s words. I hope you find it the perfect outdoor summer entertainment!

The Portland Ballet, a world-class dance academy in Portland, Oregon, is committed to fostering the future of ballet by building the next generation of dancers and audiences. Founded in 2001, TPB is shaped by the vision, artistic experience, and family-centered sensibility of the founding directors. Artistic Director Nancy Davis and Executive Director Jim Lane trained at the School of American Ballet and enjoyed distinguished professional careers in companies throughout the U.S. After retiring as principal dancers of the Los Angeles Ballet – where their partnership onstage led to a marriage and family off the stage – they moved to Portland, Oregon, and founded The Portland Ballet.
Graduates have carried TPB’s reputation for excellence into professional companies and conservatory programs throughout the U.S. and abroad. TPB alumni have gone on to dance with Pacific Northwest Ballet, Houston Ballet, Boston Ballet, Miami City Ballet, Saint Louis Ballet, Sacramento Ballet, Ballet West, Nevada Ballet Theatre, Royal Swedish Ballet, Eugene Ballet, Batsheva Dance Company, Mariinsky Ballet, Pennsylvania Ballet, and other professional companies.
