Portland PRIDE Parade @ Portland
Jun 18 @ 8:00 am – 10:00 am

Join the MJCC and a dozen other Jewish organizations and synagogues from our community as we march together at Portland PRIDE.

Meet between 8 – 10 am on NW Everett between 8th and Broadway. Join us for bagels, nosh and coffee at 9:00 am. Swag will be available. See you Sunday!

The 2017 Portland PRIDE theme is “We ARE the Change!”

Pride is the tangible and VERY visible representation of LGBTQ progress and power. Whether we call it a march or a parade, when Portland’s downtown streets fill with tens of thousands of people claiming their space and celebrating who they are-who WE are-make no mistake, that is power and that is change. We ARE the Change!

Rivkah & Nica’s Dream Jazz @ The 1905
Sep 14 @ 6:00 pm
Rivkah & Nica's Dream Jazz @ The 1905
Jewish Jazz drummer Rivkah Ross will perform with the all-female Nica’s Dream jazz group.
Rivkah currently sits on the board of Beth Israel’s Jews Next D’or.

Rivkah began to play drums after being inspired by a Sevendust concert in Miami, FL. After a few years of being self-taught and playing in local bands, she attended Broward College in Davie, FL, as a music major and studied jazz drum set and classical percussion. Rivkah played and recorded with a variety of South Florida artists, including Andrew Bayuk, the four-time winner of the American Idol Underground Folk Competition.

In 2008, Rivkah moved to Los Angeles to study drumming at Musicians Institute. While being a student at Musicians Institute, she went on tours around California with Jeff Hershey and the Heartbeats, a 1960’s soul-rock band, and recorded and played with many other local artists. Rivkah opened for Dick Dale, the B-52s, and The New Mastersounds with Jeff Hershey and the Heartbeats. The band went on to complete three European tours, performing multiple dates in Spain, France, Italy, Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, and Switzerland. After touring with the band, Rivkah returned to Los Angeles and continued to play and record with two unique all-female jazz bands, Lady Jazz and the Hard Bop Chicks, as well as other artists. She gained an endorsement through Soultone Cymbals while living in Los Angeles, and performed with Stevie Wonder as part of a drum ensemble on Stevie Wonder’s Annual House of Toys at the Nokia Theater. In 2016, Rivkah relocated to Portland, Oregon, where she continues to perform.

Rivkah loves to teach and is a Certified Facilitator for The Rhythmic Arts Project, a non-profit organization that teaches life skills to students with disabilities using hand drums and specialized curriculum. She has worked with students with disabilities, as well as disadvantaged and chronically ill students, and she has a special interest in working with students who face challenges. Rivkah holds a Master of Education with emphasis in Special Education from Southern New Hampshire University.

Rivkah enjoys being out in nature, spending time with loved ones, writing stories, traveling, dancing, hiking, and inspiring and teaching others, especially girls and women, to play drums. Her favorite drummers are Roy Haynes, Cindy Blackman, Terri Lyne Carrington, Elvin Jones, Tony Williams, and Sean Reinert.

Moments of the Heart- The 4 Relationships Everyone Must Have
Join educator and author Dorice Horenstein for this eight-week class (Tuesdays, 7:30-8:30 pm, Jan. 8-Feb. 26).
Explore how to live life wholeheartedly. Moments of the Heart/ Rigei Lev is her upcoming book, focusing on Jewish thought and practice, Hebrew language and spiritual connection. Our heart has a tremendous influence on how we view life, how we act and how we build relationships. Just as the heart has four chambers, we will explore four different types of relationships: with oneself, with others, with the Creator, and with special and once-in-a-life time moments that define us, that give us the essence of who we are.
Dorice  arrived in Portland,  from Israel, after meeting her soon-to-be husband while volunteering on a kibbutz. In the States, she received her BA in English Literature and a certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language. She taught hundreds of children and adults, Jews and non-Jews, the gems of Judaism, with an emphasis on the Hebrew language. Dorice has worked in synagogues and a private school, led sessions for NewCAJE and Spring Conference of the North by Northwest Region of Women’s League of Conservative Judaism organizations, and was the Education Director at a synagogue in Portland for 16 years. Together with her husband, Bob, Dorice has three children. She enjoys dancing in her spare time.
Moments of the Heart is about the four relationships one should experience in their life-time! It is a book that encourages readers to live fully and wholeheartedly. Our heart has a tremendous influence on how we view life, how we act, and how we build relationships. In the Bible, the word heart—or in Hebrew, lev (לב)—is mentioned no fewer than 202 times. If one takes the first and last letter of the Torah, the word created is lev, heart. And so, my book is a compilation of entries that enable us to find inspiration, direction, concepts and encouragement to live a better life. It is about the universal experience of being human-through the Jewish lens. Join us to find out what are the four relationships that will help create the best YOU possible!
