Every Minute Counts – Photographs by Katherine Joseph @ Oregon Jewish Museum and Center for Holocaust Education
Jun 29 @ 10:00 am – Sep 25 @ 5:00 pm

The museum presents “Every Minute Counts – Photographs by Katherine Joseph.” Katherine Joseph was born in the Ukraine and immigrated with her family to the United States in the early 20th century. After a childhood in El Paso and Chicago, she made an adventurous move to New York City to pursue a passion for photography. She landed a job as staff photographer for the International Ladies Garment Workers Union, where she explored the relationship between worker, machine and the industrial environment. In 1941 she embarked on a photojournalistic expedition to Mexico to demonstrate the durability of the “Americar” manufactured by the Willys – Overland Motor Company. Joseph continued to document American workers on the home front after returning to New York. At the end of the war, like millions of American women of her generation, she set aside her camera to marry and raise a family. Katherine Joseph’s photographs display a profound respect for the fundamental dignity of the people she brought into focus. This is the first public exhibition of her work.

This summer, P’nai Or is taking it outside! Please join us at 6 pm on Friday, Sept. 9 at Wilshire Park (NE 33rd & Skidmore) picnic area for a very joyful, very musical Kabbalat Shabbat with Reb Yitz. Affordable Housing Forum @ Havurah Shalom
Sep 14 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm

In November, the residents of Portland will vote on a $258 million general obligation bond that will provide more money for affordable housing in Portland. The Havurah Steering Committee has endorsed the passage of this bond. What is the scope and impact of the housing problem; what does this bond measure mean to you, to our community?

On Sept. 14, we will have a fantastic panel of Havurah members who have devoted their lives to housing issues:

  • Steve Rudman – Former Head of Portland’s Housing Bureau and Home Forward
  • Janet Byrd – Executive Director of Neighborhood Partnerships
  • David Fuks – CEO Emeritus of Cedar Sinai Park

We will also have a representative from Yes for Affordable Homes campaign who will let us know about opportunities to support the passage of this bond.

Housing is THE issue in Portland and among Metropolitan Alliance for Common Good (MACG) institutions. MACG has been organizing about the housing issues (affordability, availability) in both Multnomah and Clackamas counties. MACG was instrumental in getting the City of Portland to increase the money set aside for affordable housing in urban renewal areas from 30% to 45% (an increase of $67 million), by testifying in Salem for the Inclusionary Zoning bill and by making sure the new construction excise tax was used only for affordable housing.

Please plan on attending. Bring your questions, bring your friends.

Tiferet Shabbat @ Congregation Shaarie Torah
Sep 17 @ 9:15 am – 12:15 pm

Please join Congregation Shaarie Torah for a special Shabbat morning service. At this service, we will include new melodies, explore the service with some reflections on the prayers themselves, and chant according to the Triennial cycle of Torah readings.  It will be a mix of the beautiful and familiar traditional Shabbat morning service and new ideas and energy.  This service meets in the Chapel downstairs on the third Saturday of the month.
