Jerusalem was a divided city for 19 years. While it is now reunited, security remains very complex. In this tour at the southern edge of the city, we review the history of Jerusalem divided and reunited, examine the expansion of the city’s borders following the Six Day War, peer over the security barrier into Bethlehem, and delve into the context, challenges, and successes of the barrier’s construction.
Torah Troop for 3rd-5th Graders
1st and 3rd Shabbat every month at 10:00am
Torah Troop allows families at Congregation Neveh Shalom to move into the main sanctuary while still enjoying youth-oriented activity. At 10:00am, families meet in the main service. After the beginning Torah service, youth join their friends for a lesson on the Torah portion (parsha) of the week with adult leaders, and come back to help lead the Adon Olam at the end of the service.
As always, we end with our community for lunch!
Opening to Revelation with Rabbi Shefa Gold
On Sunday, May 2, just two weeks before the holiday of Shavuot when Jews around the world will be celebrating the revelation of Torah, the Havurah Synagogue will be hosting a workshop with Rabbi Shefa Gold, from 10 AM – noon, titled Opening to Revelation. In counting the days of the Omer, the counting of the fifty days from the second night of Passover, the holiday of liberation, to Shavuot, we are preparing ourselves to become the vessels for G-d’s Presence and messengers for the Divine Word. G-d instructs Moses to tell us to make ourselves holy for the Day of Revelation, to wash our garments and get ready! In this workshop of preparation for Shavuot, we will use the modalities of study, chant and holy conversation to prepare ourselves as channels for the Divine flow of Revelation that is available in each moment of radiant presence.
Rabbi Shefa Gold is a leader in Aleph: the Alliance for Jewish Renewal and received her ordination both from the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College and from Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi. She is the director of C-DEEP The Center for Devotional, Energy and Ecstatic Practice in Jemez Springs, New Mexico. Shefa composes and performs spiritual music, has produced ten albums, and her liturgies have been published in several new prayer-books. She teaches workshops and retreats on the theory and art of Chanting, Devotional Healing, Spiritual Community Building, Meditation, and trained Chant Leaders in Kol Zimra, a two year program for rabbis, cantors and lay leaders. She is a resource faculty for the Institute for Jewish Spirituality and a fellow for CLAL’s Rabbis without Borders. She was recently named “One of the 33 most Inspiring Rabbis in America,” by the Jewish Forward. Her new project is called SOULIFT, a one week immersion in spiritual practice designed to lift us into the Soul perspective. Shefa combines her grounding in Judaism with a background in Buddhist, Christian, Islamic, and Native American spiritual traditions to make her uniquely qualified as a spiritual bridge celebrating the shared path of devotion. She is the author of Torah Journeys: The Inner Path to the Promised Land, and In the Fever of Love: An Illumination of the Song of Songs and Are We There Yet? Travel as a Spiritual Practice, published by Ben Yehuda Press, and The Magic of Hebrew Chant: Healing the Spirit, Transforming the Mind, Deepening Love published by Jewish Lights.
