11th Annual Sara Glasgow Cogan Memorial Lecture

Doors open at 7 pm, Lecture begins at 7:30 pm on April 25.

Renowned Yale historian Timothy Snyder will speak on “Resisting Tyranny: Lessons from the European 20th Century.” The lecture received support from PSU Professor Emeritus Nathan Cogan and the Oregon Jewish Museum and Center for the Holocaust Education, through a grant from Oregon Humanities. Cosponsored by the Oregon Jewish Community Foundation, Jewish Federation of Greater Portland, Oregon Historical Society, Mittleman Jewish Community Center/Portland Jewish Academy, Russian Flagship program at PSU, Jonathan and Wendy Cogan, and Holocaust and Genocide Studies Project at PSU.

Memoir Writing Workshop @ Mittleman Jewish Community Center

Everyone has a story to tell and every story is unique, interesting, and special. In this workshop you will have an opportunity to write your story in a supportive, noncritical atmosphere. Dorothy Dworkin, an experienced author, columnist, and writing coach, will offer prompts and suggestions to get you started on writing your stories.

Every Thursday April 5-May 3. Class on April 19 will begin at 12:00 pm.

Class is located in Ballroom A.

Class size is limited to 12.

Families with children ages 0-2nd grade join together for a fantastic weekend at Camp Solomon Schechter. Together we’ll celebrate Shabbat with family friendly services, activities and games. Adults will have time to relax as well. Located on the beautiful grounds of Camp Solomon Schechter in Olympia, WA we’ll enjoy the natural surroundings throughout Shabbat. Pricing includes: shared cabin, Friday dinner, three meals and two snacks on Saturday and a Sunday brunch.

P’nai Or service with Rabbi Hannah Laner @ P'nai Or of Portland

Rabbi Hannah Laner, who is in Portland at the invitation of P’nai Or’s Rabbinic Search Committee, is a rabbi and cantorial soloist with over twenty-five years’ experience creating and leading services for High Holidays, Shabbat, and other holidays. She is a professional Jewish educator who infuses her teaching with a passionate love of Torah and tradition. As an officiant of lifecycle rituals, she engages students, families, and couples in meaningful rites of passage. She is also a certified psychotherapist with skills at counseling students, families, and couples.

She has led services for Congregation Nevei Kodesh – a Jewish Renewal congregation in Boulder, Colorado – since 1988 and has also served as High Holy Day leader at several other congregations in the Boulder area. She received smicha (ordination) from the ALEPH (Jewish Renewal) rabbinic training program in 2013, and she has engaged in study through the Pardes Institute in Israel, the ALEPH Davenen Leadership Training Program, and the Maggidah program taught by Maggidah Devorah Zaslow and Rabbi David Zaslow. She has studied with Reb Zalman in Naropa University and completed a year of intensive training in Rabbi Tirzah Firestone’s Ma’ayan Raz program.

Kabbalat Shabbat services will be followed by an Oneg Shabbat.

North Coast Shabbat Group @ Seaside Senior Center

The first services of the North Coast Shabbat Group will be held on Friday, April 27 at the Senior Center in Seaside at 1225 Avenue A.  Services begin at 8:00p.m., followed by an Oneg Shabbat.
Leonard and Elayne Shapiro will be the leaders.
Services are open to all and usually  held  on the last Friday of each month from April to October. Volunteers lead the services each month. Following are the leaders for 2018:
