On Saturday, July 15, Havurah Shalom will welcome Emanuel Ben-David as our Scholar in Residence. As a rabbinical student, longtime service leader, and native Israeli, Emanuel notices nuances in Hebrew that result in teachings of great depth.
Emanuel will lead a community minyan from 10 am to noon, which will be followed by a potluck vegetarian lunch. In the afternoon, he will give two presentations.
The first presentation begins at 1:30 pm, and examines some of the driving forces and origins that make Israelis who they are. Emanuel will present “Ten Commandments” that define the typical Israeli, with each commandment supported by examples and facts. Many of the examples come from Emanuel’s personal experience and are presented in a light and humorous fashion.
The second presentation begins at 3 pm and unveils Emanuel’s personal experience working for decades for Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, one of the major three defense contractors in Israel. Among the technologies and products he will describe are the Iron Dome and David’s Sling, two of the three layers of Israel’s Missile Defense Architecture. He will also give an example of how defense technology has been transposed to the medical arena, providing breakthroughs in life saving practices.
All are welcome. Please RSVP at tinyurl.com/EmBenDa.

Vedem: The Underground Magazine of the Terezin Ghetto
Vedem Underground examines the literary magazine written by Jewish teens imprisoned at Terezin, a Nazi camp in Czechoslovakia during the Second World War. Using pop-art graphics, drawings and paintings, and the prose and poetry, these brave adolescents secretly wrote and illustrated the longest-running underground magazine in a Nazi camp. Vedem (Czech for “In the Lead”) documented their voices with defiance, humor and heartbreak. The exhibition breaks down their 800 original pages and reconstructs them in the form of a contemporary magazine. Curated by Rina Taraseiskey and Danny King.
