Old Jews Telling Jokes, which has been called a “pickle-barrel full of giggles,” showcases five actors in a revue-type production that pays tribute to and reinvents classic jokes of the past and present. It celebrates the rich tradition of Jewish humor and ‘all the rabbis, complaining wives, fed-up husbands, patience-challenged physicians, gossiping ladies, and competitive men’ populating it. The humor is suggestive and even raunchy as the ‘Old Jews’ make fun of themselves as well as followers of every other religion. Said producer Philip Roger Roy, “Think Catskills comedy with jokes, songs, stories, skits, and routines. The humor is reminiscent of the great Jewish comedians from Buddy Hackett and Alan King to Tom Lehrer, and more.” Warning: adult (bawdy) humor. Not for audiences under 21.

Winter/Spring 2020 Session begins January 30. This 18-week course is taught by members of The Oregon Board of Rabbis, representing a variety of Jewish affiliation. A carefully constructed curriculum includes Jewish history, life cycle events, holidays, ritual and daily practice, theology, study of Torah and contemporary Jewish America. Nominated for a Tony Award for Best Play of 2017. Sholem Asch’s play The God of Vengeance made a splash on Broadway in 1923, when it was shut down and all of the actors were arrested on charges of obscenity for portraying a lesbian romance between a brothel-owner’s daughter and one of the prostitutes. Pulitzer-prize winning playwright Paula Vogel weaves scenes of Asch’s incendiary play with the imagined conversations with the risk-taking company that brought the script to the stage. Indecent is a riveting backstage drama filled with music, groundbreaking Yiddish theatre, and stage magic.
Northwest Film Center will showcase and celebrate its 43rd international and regional storytelling through film. The 10-day festival will take place on March 6-15, 2020 at various locations. Some goals of the Portland International Film Festival (PIFF) are, “to gather film lovers and makers, have people be open to new ways of creative expression, and shine a spotlight on artists who go against the status quo.”
Portland International Film Festival organizers hope that patrons will embrace the idea of Cinema Unbound for the first time. Through this concept, PIFF aims to challenge how cinematic stories are told. 2020 also features renowned visiting curators, esteemed guests, industry leaders, and jury members in attendance—all of whom represent major film festivals, museums, and distribution companies around the globe.
