Judaism’s Gifts to the World @ Portland Westside
Mar 4 @ 11:00 am – 12:30 pm

By most indications, modern society is a model of moral progress. Yet when it comes to everyday values, we still grapple with the big ones…

   – What are our responsibilities toward the less fortunate?
– How do we fashion a more moral and equal society?
– How can we make a move toward more cohesive family living?

Join us to unpack six of the world’s most cherished values and how they were delivered to humankind by the Torah. By tracing their fascinating journey to the mainstream, we’ll discover a timeless core of purpose, integrity, and clarity in each value—a powerful gift of guidance as we navigate our own daily choices.

Nominated for a Tony Award for Best Play of 2017. Sholem Asch’s play The God of Vengeance made a splash on Broadway in 1923, when it was shut down and all of the actors were arrested on charges of obscenity for portraying a lesbian romance between a brothel-owner’s daughter and one of the prostitutes. Pulitzer-prize winning playwright Paula Vogel weaves scenes of Asch’s incendiary play with the imagined conversations with the risk-taking company that brought the script to the stage. Indecent is a riveting backstage drama filled with music, groundbreaking Yiddish theatre, and stage magic.

Old Jews Telling Jokes @ Indian Wells Theater (on the CSUSB Palm Desert campus)
Mar 5 @ 3:00 pm

Old Jews Telling Jokes, which has been called a “pickle-barrel full of giggles,” showcases five actors in a revue-type production that pays tribute to and reinvents classic jokes of the past and present. It celebrates the rich tradition of Jewish humor and ‘all the rabbis, complaining wives, fed-up husbands, patience-challenged physicians, gossiping ladies, and competitive men’ populating it. The humor is suggestive and even raunchy as the ‘Old Jews’ make fun of themselves as well as followers of every other religion. Said producer Philip Roger Roy, “Think Catskills comedy with jokes, songs, stories, skits, and routines. The humor is reminiscent of the great Jewish comedians from Buddy Hackett and Alan King to Tom Lehrer, and more.” Warning: adult (bawdy) humor. Not for audiences under 21.

The Huffington Post called the show, “A non-stop laugh fest.” Said the New York Times, “Hilarious … magnificent, enduring rhythm of Jewish humor!” And from the New Yorker, “The laughs-per-minute average is as high as anything you’ll find on stage!” Legendary comedian Mel Brooks enthused, “Chock full of laughs!”

Old Jews Telling Jokes has garnered rave reviews wherever it has played, including two years off Broadway and in Philadelphia, Boston, Chicago, Toronto, Baltimore, Thousand Oaks, CA, Boca Raton, FL, The George Street Playhouse in New Jersey, The Bucks County Playhouse in PA, Trinity Rep in RI, the Colony Theatre in Burbank, CA, and dozens of other venues across the USA.

The regular performance schedule is Thursday at 3pm and 8pm, Friday at 8pm, Saturday at 3pm and 8pm, and Sunday at 3pm and 7pm. Admission prices range from $45–$65 and tickets may be purchased online at www.playhouseinfo.com or by phone at (855) 448-7469. For group sales information (groups of 12+), call (888) 264-1788.

Indian Wells Theater (on the CSUSB Palm Desert campus) is located at 37500 Cook Street in Palm Desert, 92211.
