How Does our Jewish Year Invite Wonder in our Children and in Ourselves?
Explore several of our Jewish holidays and how they are connected to our Jewish beliefs around civic responsibility (Tikkun Olam), Kind community (Kehillah), the power of storytelling (Torah), and more. You will come away with ways to engage young children in meaningful interaction/conversation/activities around the Jewish holidays, and delight at participating in some of our favorite sensory activities from Foundation School. RSVP to receptionist@nevehshalom.org.
This 18-week course is taught by members of The Oregon Board of Rabbis, representing a variety of Jewish affiliations. A carefully constructed curriculum includes Jewish history, life cycle events, holidays, ritual and daily practice, theology, study of Torah and contemporary Jewish America. While not a conversion class, most OBR members consider it a prerequisite for students beginning study for conversion. Classes 7-9 pm, Thursdays, at rotating Portland area synagogues.

Led by Rabbi Arthur Zuckerman, The Jewish Encounter is a nondenominational Jewish group dedicated to adhering to the laws of Hashem. “We are Zionists, educators and lay people striving to create a community. Education of Judaism, tikkun olam (repairing the world) and prayer is our basis,” says Rabbi Zuckerman. “We have a love for Judaism in the purest sense, a passion for being unique and independent, and a quest to be a place for both the learned Jews, and the Jews who are still on their journey, to find enlightenment. We also strive to enhance the bonds of friendship with our non-Jewish Zionists, and welcome those who come to learn of our faith.”
The group has created its own siddur (prayer book) using a combination of traditional and contemporary prayers.
There are no membership dues and no ticket costs, however all donations are accepted and are tax-deductible.
