“Tablet Weaving the Aleph Bet,” a two-part class hosted by Congregation Shir Tikvah in May and taught by Portland–based master in ply splitting and tablet weaving, Linda Hendrickson, will enable those who sign up to learn to weave the aleph-bet, the Hebrew alphabet, using an ancient technique called tablet weaving, a method of producing narrow, sturdy textiles such as straps, belts and trim.
“Once students master the technique,” says Leah Hershey, a member of Portland Handweavers Guild who is organizing the class, “they can weave Hebrew text to adorn a variety of items such as bookmarks, an atarah for a tallit, or a Torah scroll binding ribbon.”
The class will focus on reading a pattern graph, turning the tablets to create designs, and unweaving to correct mistakes. Yarn and tablets are included. Other materials are provided for class use with an option to purchase.
A graph of the aleph-bet will be provided. You can expect to complete one or two letters during class time. You will leave the workshop with enough materials to weave the entire aleph-bet or a short phrase on your own.
COST: $ 50.00 Shir Tikvah members $60 general public. This fee includes instruction, yarn, and tablets.
ENROLLMENT is limited to 12. Minimum age: 12.
About the instructor: Linda Hendrickson has been teaching tablet weaving since 1992, and is the author of several instruction books including “Please Weave a Message”. She has graphed and woven reproductions of images and text from manuscript binding ribbons from Burma (Myanmar), and in 2017, she traveled to Yangon and Mandalay to meet with weavers who are working to revive lost tablet weaving skills. Unholy Betrayal: Confronting Sexual Abuse by Spiritual Leaders

Revelations of sexual misconduct in Hollywood sparked the #metoo movement and a nationwide discussion on the prevalence power dynamics and sexuality in all sectors of our culture. Emerging reports of sexual abuse in education, medicine, sports, politics, corporations, the military, in religious establishments, and in every profession has forced institutions to look inward at the causes of such behavior within their own worlds.
In the spirit of education and healing the Havurah Synagogue invites the public to attend an evening of storytelling, music, and learning called “Unholy Betrayal: Confronting Sexual Abuse by Spiritual Leaders.” Presentations will be made by Dr. Karen McClintock, Rev. Norman Burton, and Lama Yeshe Parke with a special story by Portland storyteller Donna Zerner.
The evening will be hosted by Ayala Zonnenschein and will feature music by Alice DiMicele and Cyrise Beatty Schachter. Rabbi David Zaslow says, “our presenters will offer teachings on sexual abuse within the Christian, Jewish, and Buddhist communties, but we know that sexual misconduct and abuse exists in all religions and in all denominations. Unless we are willing to shine light on the darkness within our own faiths the cycle of sexual abuse will continue. Only self-reflection honesty, confession can bring repair and healing. We hope this evening will be a start.”
The event is free, open to the public, and will take place Sunday evening, May 20 at 7:30 pm. Vedem: The Underground Magazine of the Terezin Ghetto
Vedem Underground examines the literary magazine written by Jewish teens imprisoned at Terezin, a Nazi camp in Czechoslovakia during the Second World War. Using pop-art graphics, drawings and paintings, and the prose and poetry, these brave adolescents secretly wrote and illustrated the longest-running underground magazine in a Nazi camp. Vedem (Czech for “In the Lead”) documented their voices with defiance, humor and heartbreak. The exhibition breaks down their 800 original pages and reconstructs them in the form of a contemporary magazine. Curated by Rina Taraseiskey and Danny King.
