Outside the Frame, in collaboration with Outside In, presents The Lost Boys of
Portlandia, a new documentary featuring the real lost children of Portland. In a riff on Peter Pan,
homeless youth debate if and how to return to mainstream society while creating their own film
version of the iconic story. The evening will include original film shorts by homeless youth and a
Q&A with the filmmakers.

Outside the Frame offers film workshops to marginalized youth and video production services to
organizations that need a voice.

In the midst of a state of emergency for homelessness, down the street from where the city of Portland is building a new homeless shelter, Outside The Frame presents real solutions that can empower these capable youth and strengthen our community.

About Outside The Frame: Outside The Frame believes homeless youth are canaries in the mine,
warning of the systemic failures in our society. Our project, which offers film workshops to homeless
and marginalized youth, is a flagship for a replicable education and technology job-training program. It
is an effective, inexpensive and visible intervention that aligns with other coordinated healthcare efforts being pioneered in Oregon.
Yosha began and ran Outside The Frame in 2009 as a program of Outside In and has now spun it off into a separate nonprofit, complementing and enhancing social services in the area and empowering youth to educate the community about issues they face while showing themselves and others that they can actively contribute to the society in which they live.
Through paid internships, homeless youth gain pro-social and employable skills while forming
community connections and creating socially relevant work that is screened in theaters, broadcast on television, and shared in conferences and classrooms. Outside the Frame is a gateway to employment and education. It provides hands-on technological training and literacy, relevant job experience and a sense of structure and success. Graduates of the film workshops leave with all the basic technological skills to produce their own film.
Outside The Frame’s film workshops are also a therapeutic intervention. They offer a safe and creative space for youth to reflect on, make sense of and share their stories. Through this process, participants leave with a clearer sense of self as they interact with the world.

Join Congregation Beth Israel as we gather on the Temple lawn for a beautiful outdoor Shabbat Service. Together, we’ll celebrate our community’s youngest members as they cap off another school year and prepare for their busy summers at Camp Kalsman, our very own Camp Sababa, and other summer activities.
Please join us for this engaging evening of memoir readings by students of Rob Freedman’s workshop, “Memoir Writing from a Jewish Perspective.” Each year this eight-week workshop helps participants to discover the stories they want to write and share. The emphasis is on those experiences that are uniquely Jewish in nature, reflective of our culture and identity – whether the writers are Jews by birth or by choice, or among the still perplexed.
The evening will include a brief Kabbalat Shabbat service, and will be followed by a potluck dessert oneg. To help us plan for the oneg, please RSVP here by June 6.
