OJMCHE Exhibit Tours @ Oregon Jewish Museum and Center for Holocaust Education

OJMCHE has exhibition tours every Wednesday at 1 pm.

Tours are free with admission and members, of course, can always visit for free. Come early or stay after and enjoy lunch in the museum’s Lefty’s Cafe!

Vedem: The Underground Magazine of the Terezin Ghetto

Vedem Underground examines the literary magazine written by Jewish teens imprisoned at Terezin, a Nazi camp in Czechoslovakia during the Second World War. Using pop-art graphics, drawings and paintings, and the prose and poetry, these brave adolescents secretly wrote and illustrated the longest-running underground magazine in a Nazi camp. Vedem (Czech for “In the Lead”) documented their voices with defiance, humor and heartbreak. The exhibition breaks down their 800 original pages and reconstructs them in the form of a contemporary magazine. Curated by Rina Taraseiskey and Danny King.

To Tell The Story: The Wolloch Holocaust Haggadah

On view in the East Gallery: Commissioned by Helene and Zygfryd B. Wolloch, The Holocaust Haggadah is richly illustrated with lithographic prints by David Wander and calligraphy by Yonah Weinreb that link the story of liberation from ancient Egypt to the Holocaust.

Day of Dignity @ NW Park Blocks ("Elephant Park")

On Sunday, September 10, JFCS will once again partner with Islamic Social Services of Oregon and other local nonprofits to hold the annual Day of Dignity. Each year, we serve 500 to 600 homeless people at the event, which will be held in the NW Park Blocks (“Elephant Park”) from 12pm to 4pm.

What’s provided at Day of Dignity? First and foremost, we strive to offer acceptance and a sense of belonging to the homeless men and women we serve. We are all needed in the effort to end chronic homelessness. Clearly, more housing is needed, but so too are physical and mental health services, better food security, safety for victims of domestic violence, and shelter for LGBTQ kids who are shunned by their families — to name just a few of the many needs.

On a more tangible note, this year the Day of Dignity coalition will distribute 300 backpacks that have a built-in rain poncho to keep the wearer and pack dry. We’ll hand out socks, mittens, hygiene kits for men and women, first aid kits, and hoodies to keep people warm. Other offerings will include medical screenings and case managers from an array of organizations who can link people to services and help them start a planning process for securing permanent, supportive housing.
