An interactive look at the recently published book Pirkei Imahot, the Wisdom of Mothers, the Voices of Women. Together we will look at a few pieces of text from the original Jewish text Pirkei Avot: Ethics of the Fathers and respond to them from our modern point of view. We’ll then look at what modern wisdom we live by and how we can continue to share the wisdom held within each of us.

Rabbi Robert Kahn will present: From the Gaga Pit at CSS to the Holy City of Jerusalem: An informal and educational journey.
The son of Judith and Garry Kahn, Rob Kahn grew up in Portland as part of the Congregation Neveh Shalom kehilla. He spent many years at Camp Solomon Schechter – from camper to Camp Director. After earning his B.A. degree from Brandeis University, Rabbi Kahn went to Rabbinical School at the Jewish Theological Seminary and then became the Congregational Rabbi at Beth El Synagogue in Minneapolis for 15 years. In 2008, he made Aliyah with his family and settled in Jerusalem. He began as the Education Director at Young Judaea Year Course, and is currently a freelance tour guide and director of Israel programs for the Golda Och Academy in West Orange, NJ. Rob is the son of longtime Neveh Shalom members Judith and Garry Kahn.
* Over the years young Portlanders have moved on and established a name for themselves in a wide variety of fields. The Fruit of the Vine series will bring some of them back to Portland to share
their insights in their respective areas.

Furthering a student’s education is a critical component of the development of individuals and strong communities. When students receive a complete education – one that balances the sciences and arts – the rewards and effectiveness can multiply and ripple through a community. Coupling music education with other subjects has proven to produce higher academic results than without a music-learning component. Furthermore, students that are exposed to other cultures and customs can have a greater perspective and compassion when dealing with our complex and diversified society. The Snowman and Rotary Club of Tigard Foundations are partnering together to help support education in its many forms.
