CONDUCTING AN EFFECTIVE (AND FUN) ORAL HISTORY INTERVIEW
* “Oral history refers both to a method of recording and preserving oral testimony and to the product of that process.”
OJMCHE’s institutional mission is to interpret the Oregon Jewish experience, explore the lessons of the Holocaust and foster intercultural conversations.
Description: The Oral History Project is a key part of the OJMCHE’s mission to preserve and present the history of Oregon’s Jewish community The central goal is to develop a community oral history archive that provides a chronicle of the experiences of the Jews of Oregon. The project began by documenting the lives of the former residents of South Portland in the 1970s. Efforts have also included the testimonies of Holocaust survivors and liberators of death camps. Several focused efforts are currently underway to collect multiple histories from within particular geographic or communal areas throughout the state.
Bio: Anne LeVant Prahl, the Curator of Collections at the Oregon Jewish Museum and Center for Holocaust Education, has been working in collections management since 1987. She began doing oral history by interviewing former members of Texas’ Black gospel quartets for the Texas Music Museum as part of her masters work in anthropology at the University of Texas. In Oregon, as part of her position of curator, she runs the oral history program for the museum, training interviewers, identifying interview subjects, and maintaining the collection of nearly 700 oral histories.

About Outside The Frame: Outside The Frame believes homeless youth are canaries in the mine,
warning of the systemic failures in our society. Our project, which offers film workshops to homeless
and marginalized youth, is a flagship for a replicable education and technology job-training program. It
is an effective, inexpensive and visible intervention that aligns with other coordinated healthcare efforts being pioneered in Oregon.
Yosha began and ran Outside The Frame in 2009 as a program of Outside In and has now spun it off into a separate nonprofit, complementing and enhancing social services in the area and empowering youth to educate the community about issues they face while showing themselves and others that they can actively contribute to the society in which they live.
Through paid internships, homeless youth gain pro-social and employable skills while forming
community connections and creating socially relevant work that is screened in theaters, broadcast on television, and shared in conferences and classrooms. Outside the Frame is a gateway to employment and education. It provides hands-on technological training and literacy, relevant job experience and a sense of structure and success. Graduates of the film workshops leave with all the basic technological skills to produce their own film.
Outside The Frame’s film workshops are also a therapeutic intervention. They offer a safe and creative space for youth to reflect on, make sense of and share their stories. Through this process, participants leave with a clearer sense of self as they interact with the world.
