Yom HaShoah Holocaust Memorial Tour @ Oregon Holocaust Memorial
Apr 8 @ 12:00 pm

In honor of Holocaust Remembrance Day join us for a tour of the Oregon Holocaust Memorial with a tour led by co-chairs of the OJMCHE Speakers’ Bureau, educator Jill Slansky and Holocaust survivor Evelyn Banko.

The Oregon Holocaust Memorial, dedicated August 29, 2004, serves as a permanent reminder of the Holocaust, the systematic, bureaucratic, state-sponsored persecution and murder of six million Jews and millions of others by the Nazi regime and its collaborators from 1933 to 1945. Millions were murdered because of their political or religious beliefs, physical and mental disabilities, sexual orientation, or assistance to the persecuted. By teaching the lessons of the Holocaust and visiting the Memorial, we pay homage to those who lost their lives during that period. Further, there is hope that we can encourage future generations to be accepting of all people. Oregon Jewish Museum and Center for Holocaust Education is the steward of the Oregon Holocaust Memorial.

Please join us for the 2018 Lorry I. Lokey Lecture featuring Dr. Aviva Halamish of the Open University of Israel titled, “Not What You Think: The Role of the Holocaust in the Establishment of Israel”

Contemplate and confront the widely accepted assumption that the Holocaust had a decisive influence on the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948.

Explore questions like: Is there a link between the Holocaust and the establishment of Israel? Who promotes this claim? What really happened and how did the Holocaust impact the process of establishing a Jewish state in Palestine?

This event is made possible thanks to the generous support of Lorry I. Lokey. Cosponsored by the Oregon Jewish Museum and Center for Holocaust Education and the Middle East Studies Center.

DENIAL. Deborah Lipstadt is an American professor of Holocaust studies whose speaking engagement is disrupted by David Irving, a Nazi Germany scholar. He files a lawsuit in the UK against Lipstadt and her publisher for declaring him a Holocaust denier in her books. As in the UK, the burden of proof in a libel case lies with the accused, Lipstadt and her legal team led by solicitor Anthony Julius and barrister Richard Rampton, must prove that Irving lied about the Holocaust. Historical drama based on true story.
