OJMCHE Grand Opening @ Oregon Jewish Museum and Center for Holocaust Education
Jun 11 @ 12:00 pm – 4:00 pm

OJMCHE’s inaugural exhibit in the main gallery features a visually stunning collection of works by Russian Jewish artist Grisha Bruskin, who is featured in Russia’s pavilion at this year’s Venice Biennale. Bruskin’s “The ALEFBET: the Alphabet of Memory” features large-scale tapestries draping the walls of the main gallery accompanied by the artist’s preparatory drawings and related gouache paintings, all referencing Kabbalistic and Talmudic teaching, biblical narratives and Russian folklore.

The inaugural exhibit in the smaller gallery in the lobby is “Herman Brookman, Visualizing the Sacred,” featuring drawings by the architect of Temple Beth Israel. The Brookman exhibit is in conjunction with the Portland Art Museum’s exhibition “Quest for Beauty: the Architecture, Landscapes and Collections of John Yeon.” Brookman was an early mentor to Yeon.

Also debuting at the grand opening are the museum’s three core exhibits – “Discrimination and Resistance: An Oregon Primer,” “Oregon Jewish Stories” and “The Holocaust: An Oregon Perspective.”

Nani: A Musical Journey into the Ancient Roots of Israeli Music @ Congregation Neveh Shalom
Jun 12 @ 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm

Please join Congregation Neveh Shalom and Israel360 for a special musical journey into the ancient roots of Israeli music by international musical artist, Nani.

About Nani:

Nani’s hypnotizing vocals breathe new life into the ancient Ladino language, bringing together Middle Eastern musical blends with all-time favorite Hebrew songs & Jazz standards. Nani is often compared to the most powerful women in music, including Liz Wright and Mercedes Sosa. Her previous releases include “Love Migration,” charting the top 20 iTunes bestselling albums in 2015. Some of her accolades include but are not limited to being featured on the most prestigious jazz and world music festivals.

About Israel360:

Israel360 is a pilot project of The Kindness Commons™ and is housed at Congregation Neveh Shalom, Portland, Oregon.

Israel360 is a series of regularly occurring programs that will consider many aspects of Israel–modern and ancient–from diverse viewpoints and approaches. Some sessions will have a cultural, political or military focus, while other events will examine Israeli history, sociology or the peace process.

In today’s world, any mention of Israel can be contentious, because people arrive at events with pre-formed opinions. To help us grow past this, and to model the Jewish values of shmirat halashon (thoughtful speech), derekh eretz (civility) and makhlokhet l’shem shamayim (directed dialogue), all programs will be facilitated.

At each event, attendees will be reminded of a set of guidelines for participation. The goal is to ensure that dialogue and discussion are respectful and that questions and comments spring from a sense of curiosity rather than a desire to prove a position or score a rhetorical point.

Aging in Place: A Talk on the Village Movement @ MJCC
Jun 15 @ 1:30 pm – 2:30 pm

Do you know someone who wants to age in their own home?  Come learn about River West Village. Part of the Village Movement, which started in Boston 15 years ago, we help people age at home by bringing services to them. A nonprofit membership organization, not a real estate development or retirement community, we depend on grants, donations and membership dues for finances and on recruiting intergenerational volunteers for services like helping seniors with shopping and transportation.  Perhaps most importantly, we build community through activities such as potlucks, educational outings and coffee clubs. More than 200 villages nationwide are open with another 150 in development. River West Village launches October 1.
