Ruth will discuss and answer questions about the book she wrote, “To Survive is not Enough” which is based on the many stories she has heard from Holocaust survivors. She also tells what life was like for a Jewish child in fascist Austria.

Kabbalah Meditation with Rabbi David Zaslow
Beginning on Thursday, June 21 from 5-6 pm, Rabbi David Zaslow will teach an introduction class in Kabbalah Meditation. Participants will learn to understand the chakra system in Judaism known as Sefirot. Rabbi David will uncover the secrets of Jewish mysticism in simple and accessible language, and in ways that can benefit daily life. Class will take place on four Thursdays: June 21 and 28, July 12 and 19 from 5-6 pm. Class fee is $30 and pre-registration is requested by calling 541-488-7716. Heidi Duckler Dance/Northwest (HDD/NW) presents the world premiere of “Waters of the World” on the weekends of June 15th & 16th and June 22 & 23 at 8:30pm.
Directed by Heidi Duckler, the performance will include five dancers Kya Bliss, Conrad Kaczor, Erin DeLaney, Kiel Moton and Jenny Windom performing on the fifth floor of the Fair-Haired Dumbbell Building’s canted six-story towers. This immersive work will also include projections by Eric Rauh and live prepared piano by Jennifer Wright.
Duckler’s “Waters of the World” is based on a short story of the same title by Clarice Lispector. Lispector is considered by many to be the most important Jewish writer since Kafka, and the context around this short story contributes to Duckler’s inspiration. Set to original music composed by noted saxophonist, Joe Berry (M83) along with a recording of the story narrated by Paula Rebelo (Star of Sarah Ruhl’s The Clean House and 2015 Ovation Award winner), the imagery ranges from the amniotic fluid of birth to the Portland rain culminating in a primordial flood.

With L.A. Israeli Folk Dance Leader Lior Haykeen!
This year, as we continue to celebrate Israel at 70, Israeli folk dancers in Portland are planning a celebration through dance, music, food and camaraderie. On Sat. June 23rd, 2018 we will gather at the MJCC with special guest dance leader extraordinaire from L.A., Lior Haykeen. Lior will be joined by local dance leaders to offer dance sessions for families, tweens, teens, and adults. Israeli folk dance is a foundation of Israel’s history and culture, and Portland and Northwest folk dancers – whether seasoned, new, or returning — can carry on this cultural tradition through a celebration at the MJCC that includes instruction and open dancing, a scrumptious Israeli style buffet, a fun dance party, schmoozing and more!

The Mittleman Jewish Community Center will host its second annual outdoor concert series this summer. The three-concert series will be held on the MJCC lawn, weather permitting. Food and drinks will be available for purchase.
The series kicks off at 5:30 pm, Sunday, June 24, with Lior Ben-Hur and Sol Tevel. Born in Jerusalem with Greek and Iraqi roots, Lior Ben-Hur has traveled to more than a dozen countries, where he spent time learning, performing and sharing experiences with musicians and artists from around the globe. Along with his eight-piece band, Lior Ben-Hur continues to focus on his passion for reggae music while incorporating Jewish melodies. Cost: $10
The series continues July 26. Internationally acclaimed American/Israeli rock group Moshav will perform at 7 pm, Thursday, July 26. Moshav began when childhood friends Yehuda and Duvid made music together on Moshav Mevo Modiin, a cooperative community of farmers in Israel. Cost: $10.
On Sunday, Aug. 19, local musicians will provide music from 11 am to 2 pm. Several Portland musicians are scheduled to perform. This event also features crafts and activities for young families. Cost: $5.
