Neveh Shalom has invited former NPR correspondent Ketzel Levine to introduce us to The Portland Jewish Response Group , an organization she recently co-founded to raise awareness about sex trafficking in our community. Acknowledging that this isn’t the easiest of issues to discuss, Ketzel will give an overview of the problem, challenge the language we use in framing the issues, and address what this has to do with the Jewish community. She’ll offer insight into ways to keep our children safe and provide tools for those who want to join the fight against this widespread crime. This talk is appropriate for ages 18 and over. Tradition tells us that the heavens are most open to prayer during the Days of Awe. Our Selichot Service will be held in Havurah’s Bet HaKnesset. We will begin the process of T’shuvah, of resolving those issues that have been heavy on our hearts and minds, and of welcoming the New Year. Please arrive early and bring a pillow to sit on and a candle in a container.

We invite you to join us on Friday, Dec. 30, to welcome Shabbat, spread the light of the Chanukah candles, and share our feelings, fears, and hopes for the difficult times we are facing as a country. For those of us who came together on the Sunday after the election, it was a powerful expression of community, and there have been requests to identify some next steps. It continues to feel premature to launch a specific action plan. Instead, it seems more appropriate to gather in community, listen to how we are doing, and continue conversations about our hopes and fears about areas such as immigrants and refugees, poverty and homelessness, climate change, equity, and gun control.
We will begin by lighting the Chanukah and Shabbat candles, sing some songs, and then spend our time talking and listening. There will not be a formal Friday night service.

And so, my book is a compilation of entries that enable us to find inspiration, direction, concepts and encouragement to live a better life. Kennedy, Pulitzer Prize-winning historian, come together from different points of view to investigate the idea of a unifying American creed. Their spirited inquiry frames the stories of people striving to bridge deepening divides in different communities around the country. Director Sam Ball will join us for an in-depth conversation following the film.

Join us for a special presentation with feminist Jewish writer and teacher, Dr. Rachel Adelman. She will offer the D’var Torah during Shabbat morning services and will be guest teaching on the topic “Hanukkah Heroines of Yore” in the afternoon. Dr. Adelman teaches Hebrew Bible in the rabbinical program at Hebrew College in Boston. Her most recent book is The Female Ruse — Women’s Deception and Divine Sanction in the Hebrew Bible.
