Spring 2021 Session begins January 21. This 18-week course is taught by members of The Oregon Board of Rabbis, representing a variety of Jewish affiliation. A carefully constructed curriculum includes Jewish history, life cycle events, holidays, ritual and daily practice, theology, study of Torah and contemporary Jewish America. While not a conversion class, most OBR members consider it a prerequisite for students beginning study for conversion. Classes 7-9 pm, Thursdays, normally at rotating Portland area synagogues, but due to COVID-19, this term will be held online via Zoom. Register online,

Torah Troop for 3rd-5th Graders

1st and 3rd Shabbat every month at 10:00am

Torah Troop allows families at Congregation Neveh Shalom to move into the main sanctuary while still enjoying youth-oriented activity. At 10:00am, families meet in the main service. After the beginning Torah service, youth join their friends for a lesson on the Torah portion (parsha) of the week with adult leaders, and come back to help lead the Adon Olam at the end of the service.

As always, we end with our community for lunch!

Learning to Believe Again with Neshama Carlebach and Rabbi Menachem Creditor @ Havurah Shir Hadash
Jun 6 @ 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm

The Havurah Synagogue in Ashland is pleased to present a live streaming program featuring Neshama Carlebach and Rabbi Menachem Creditor on Sunday, June 6 at 7:00 PM PST via Zoom. Learning to Believe Again Belief can be understood as cultivating the ability to hope for better days, building the strength to hold onto faith, and holding on to the Holy One. Join Rabbi Menachem Creditor and Neshama Carlebach for an intimate, musical conversation of healing and hope. After a year unlike any other, join these renowned spiritual leaders for an experience of song, text and spirit designed to uplift your hearts and inspire your souls. This event is being co-sponsored by P’nai Or of Portland.

Rabbi David Zaslow says, “We are so blessed to have these two incredible people offering us 90 minutes of great music and Torah teachings. Neshama, continuing the legacy of the Carlebach family, is giving the world beautiful new interpretations of our favorite Jewish prayers and songs. Her husband, Rabbi Menachem, is famous for his beautiful chant “Olam Hesed Yibaneh” and his deep and profound Torah teachings. Come join us!”

Neshama Carlebach is an award-winning singer, songwriter and educator who has performed and taught in cities around the world.  A winner and four-time Independent Music Awards Nominee for her most current release, Believe, Neshama has sold over one million records, making her one of today’s best-selling Jewish artists in the world.  Neshama has been a cornerstone of major Jewish music festivals across the U.S. and globally, performing in front of thousands at countless concerts and gatherings for audiences of all ages and backgrounds. As a teenager she performed alongside her father, the late Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach. As the first then-Orthodox woman of her generation to perform for a mixed-gender audience, Neshama has sparked public conversations with brave forays into the place of women in Judaism and today’s world. Neshama lives in New York with her husband Rabbi Menachem Creditor, and their five children.

Rabbi Menachem Creditor serves as the Pearl and Ira Meyer Scholar in Residence at UJA-Federation New York and was the founder of Rabbis Against Gun Violence. A frequent speaker in communities and campuses around the United States and Israel with over 1 million views of his online videos and essays, he was named by Newsweek as one of the fifty most influential rabbis in America. His 21 books and 6 albums of original music include the global Jewish anthem “Olam Chesed Yibaneh” and the Rabbis Against Gun Violence anthology “None Shall Make Them Afraid.” He has been involved in the leadership of American Jewish World Service, AIPAC, the Rabbinical Assembly, and the One America Movement, an organization dedicated to bringing together Americans of different faiths and opinions. He and his wife Neshama Carlebach live in New York, where they are raising their five children.
