Maayan Torah Day School Benefit Dinner @ MJCC
Feb 20 @ 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Exploding from a small startup school, to filling out our new campus in just a few years, Maayan has shown it is here to stay. For the past eight years, Maayan has proven that combining a high caliber secular education with a Torah true education is a possibility in Portland, OR!

Please join us for our benefit dinner 6 pm Feb. 20th at the MJCC to partner with our mission in shaping tomorrow’s leaders!  Proceeds from the evening go directly towards the Maayan scholarship fund.

The evening includes a raffle/auction. Everyprize has its own unique raffle. See a prize you like? Purchase your entries into that raffle. The more tickets you buy to a particular raffle the greater the odds you have to win that prize. The raffles will be drawn at the end of the Maayan Benefit Dinner held at the MJCC on Feb 20.

Maayan is unique. We offer a warm nurturing atmosphere where Jewish children ages 18 mo. – 8th grade and their families of all stripes feel comfortable and welcome regardless of affiliation. Children who receive the Maayan experience cherish their Jewish education and are excited to continue living their lives through the prism of Torah well beyond their years here.  Come join the Maayan family and see for yourself!

Film: Lies & Miracles: Childhood in a Siberian Labor Camp @ Oregon Jewish Museum and Center for Holocaust Education
Feb 20 @ 7:00 pm

Film Screening Lies & Miracles: Childhood in a Siberian Labor Camp. Presented in partnership with Congregation Shir Tikvah.

Post screening talk back with the filmmaker, Nancy Margulies and the film’s star, George Landau

Join us for a screening of this timely documentary chronicling the power of living one’s values and discovering the miraculous during the harshest of times. In 1939, World War II broke out as Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union invaded Poland. About 1.7 million Polish people — targeted for their beliefs and class — were deported to slave labor camps in remote Siberia. More than half didn’t survive. But Mark and Etta Landau, along with their 7- and 9-year-old sons, did.

This is the story that Montana filmmaker Nancy Margulies — George and Henry’s cousin — opens up in the new documentary “Lies and Miracles.” In about 40 minutes, interviews with George Landau and family friend and fellow survivor Irenka Taurek, archival footage and Margulies’ original art skillfully present an experience that drastically changed the course of lives and history.
