Raoul Wallenberg: To Me, There’s No Other Choice.

Learn the story behind the Swedish diplomat who single-handedly saved thousands of Jews in Nazi-occupied Hungary during World War II.

By issuing protective passports and buying buildings to establish as sovereign Swedish territory in Budapest, Wallenberg was able to shelter Jews during 1944 and save an estimated 15,000 lives in just six months. His life and legacy stand as a testament to moral courage and fortitude, especially in the tragedy of his ending.

From the Swedish Institute in Stockholm, this exhibit is generously sponsored locally by Barry Peterson & Darlene Peterson and EPrint, with additional support from the Swedish Institute.

Our gallery is open Monday through Friday, 9 am-5 pm, and weekends 9 am-3 pm.

Generation to Generation; Healing Generational Trauma

On Sunday, March 18 from 4-6:00 PM the Havurah Synagogue will host Portland author and trauma healing coach, Emily Wanderer Cohen. Bring up the Holocaust in a conversation and you’ll often hear, “That was so long ago. It’s over. It’s history.” But to descendants of Holocaust survivors, or survivors of trauma inflicted upon any people – such as the Native Americans – it’s anything but. What most people don’t realize is that the children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren of those who survived the Holocaust live with the invisible weight of the trauma they didn’t experience first-hand—every single day. Emily Wanderer Cohen will discuss how intergenerational trauma can appear both mentally, physically, and emotionally and then she’ll lead a hands-on workshop to demonstrate how writing about trauma can help one heal from it. Cohen’s book, Generation to Generation: Healing Intergenerational Trauma Through Storytelling, will be available for purchase. Suggested donation: $5-$15. The Havurah is located at 185 N. Mountain Ave., in Ashland. Call 541-488-7716 for more info.

“Living While Dying” – March Movie Night @ Havurah Shalom
Mar 18 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm

During March Movie Night on Sunday, March 18, Havurah Shalom’s Ma’avar Committee will show “Living While Dying,” a film made by P’nai Or member Cathy Zheutlin.

Here is a brief description of the film: Death is a big mystery, and yet the outcome is 100 percent certain. How do you plan for the unknown? Filmmaker Cathy Zheutlin tells the stories of four friends with terminal illness who chose to live out their final days at home with creativity humor and courage. One might think that it would be depressing or morose. In fact, just the opposite – it is loving, hopeful and and full of joy. Despite cultural norms that death is meant to be vanquished, “Living While Dying” transforms sorrow and fear into inspiration and beauty. It honors what University of California San Francisco palliative care physician BJ Miller says, that “dying is a human act, not just a medical one.”

The film will be followed by a panel discussion with some experts in end-of-life care, many of whom are Havurah members.

Panelists include:

  • Rabbi Benjamin
  • Charles Blanke – Havurah member and OHSU oncologist specializing in end-of-life care and death with dignity
  • Karen Erde -Havurah member and palliative care physician
  • Susan Hedlund – Manager of Patient and Family Support Services at the OHSU Knight Cancer Institute. She has over 30 years of experience in oncology and hospice care, and worked on the original task force to legalize death with dignity.

A suggested donation of $10 will directly help the filmmaker so she can continue to pay for the production of this very beautiful and important film.
