Fall Art Gallery Exhibit Opening: Jews of Africa – A Photographic Journey through Ancient and Awakening Communities @ Mittleman Jewish Community Center

Jewish photographic documentarian Jono David showcases 59 images from his 4-year project documenting Jewish life, culture, and history in 30 African countries and territories. The exhibition features numerous anecdotal narrations and “Jewish African Voices” — video commentaries from people across the Jewish African world.

NCSY Top Chef Shabbat Edition @ MJCC

Teams of students in grades 6 to 12 compete to create best Shabbat dinner for this Oregon NCSY Top Chef Shabbat Edition. Cook-off 9 am at Ahavath Achim, 3225 SW Barbur Blvd.

Dinner at 6 pm at the MJCC, 6651 SW Capitol Hwy.

Welcome to Shabbat Top Chef and thank you for participating in this epic Jewish culinary event! Teens will meet Friday morning for the cook off, while families and friends are invited for the dinner to come taste the food and vote on the winning team!! NEW THIS YEAR: We have invited some of Portland’s top Jewish chefs to join and vote on the first place winning team. The popular vote will win second place and also receive a prize.

Cook-off Time: 9:00 am, Pick up at 3:00 pm, at Congregation Ahavath Achim, 3225 SW Barbur Blvd Portland, OR 97239
Dinner: 6:00 pm, at the MJCC, 6651 SW Capitol Hwy, Portland, OR 97219

Here is how it works:   Teams are made up of 5-6 students. Each team will propose a menu, based on a set of rules and guidelines (which will be emailed to registered teams and their parents), and then email it to Aviva Jacoby (aviva@ncsy.org) for approval. All recipes need to be submitted for approval by Wednesday Nov. 1, 2017. Once the menu is approved, we will do all of the shopping and have everything you need waiting for you to begin cooking on Friday morning, Nov. 10. No outside ingredients are allowed! At the end of the day, everything will be packaged up and transferred (by us) to the MJCC for the dinner. For more details and information, please email aviva@ncsy.org.

**Please note, participants (who are only participating in Top Chef) must be at the MJCC for dinner at 5:15 pm.**

Cost: $25 teen registration by Oct. 14, $36 after.

Ezra Weiss Sextet at Loosewig House Concert

Composer/pianist Ezra Weiss has led bands in many of the country’s greatest clubs including Dizzy’s Club Coca-Coca in NYC, the TripleDoor in Seattle, and Catalina’s in Los Angeles. He holds a Bachelors in Jazz Composition from the Oberlin Conservatory and a Masters in Jazz Piano from Queens College. His recordings include The Five A.M. Strut, Persephone, Get Happy, The Shirley Horn Suite, and Our Path To This Moment. He lives with his wife and son in Portland, where he teaches at Portland State University.

Adventures with the Mishna Berurah: A Course in Jewish Literacy @ Congregation Neveh Shalom

Why do Jews do what we do? Where do our practices come from if they are not explicitly from the Torah? What are Shabbat or daily practices that might enrich our lives? The Mishnah Berurah, is the last generally accepted code of Jewish law and custom. We will explore the theory and practice of halakhah (Jewish law) for beginners to advanced students.
