Ruth Gruber, Photojournalist celebrates the remarkable life, vision, and heroic tenacity of a twentieth-century pioneer and trailblazer. Once the world’s youngest PhD, Ruth Gruber is now in her 104th year. The photographs in this exhibition span more than fifty years, from her groundbreaking reportage of the Soviet Arctic in the 1930s and iconic images of Jewish refugees from the ship Exodus 1947, to her later photographs of Ethiopian Jews in the midst of civil war in the 1980s. A selection of Gruber’s vintage prints, never before exhibited, will be presented alongside contemporary prints made from her original negatives.
This exhibition is on loan from the International Center of Photography.

The Hidden Jews of Hollywood @ Congregation Beth Israel
Apr 20 @ 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm

What did Isur Danielovitch, Jacob Julius Garfinkel and Emanuel Goldenberg all have in common?  They were all stars of the silver screen during the golden age of Hollywood.  Only you will find them in the credits as Kirk Douglas, John Garfield and Edward G. Robinson.  And they weren’t the only ones: Betty Joan Perske found her fame as Lauren Bacall.  These stars were among the many “hidden” Jews of Hollywood.  Spend an entertaining evening with Los Angeles natives and CBI members Ron Silver and Michael Simon, who will take us back to the time when Hollywood studios kept the true identity of their stars hidden.  Jack L. Warner, although himself a Jew, was not yet ready for Emanuel Goldenberg to crawl up the steps of a Catholic Church and say the immortal line, “Mother of Mercy, is this the end of Rico?”  But Edward G. Robinson? No problem.
