God’s Goodness in View of Hate
Feb 8 @ 4:00 pm
4th Annual Rabbi Marcus Simmons Lecture Professor Andrew J. Riley Temple Beth Israel 1175 East 29th Avenue, Eugene www.tbieugene.org FREE; Donations gratefully accepted The Hebrew Bible explicitly affirms God’s goodness. For example, Psalms 136:1 says, “Give thanks to God, for God is good.” Psalms 25:8 says, “God is good and upright.” Furthermore, divine benevolence is implied in several biblical narratives. A hallmark example is God’s deliverance of Israel from bondage in the exodus. Despite such evidence, interpreters have debated God’s goodness since antiquity. Those who insist that the God of the Hebrew Bible is not good maintain the holy war of the book of Joshua or divine wrath in the prophets undermines divine benevolence. This lecture is an orientation to the debate in the field of biblical studies and considers the role of divine hate in the larger discussion. Andrew Riley is a visiting assistant professor of Hebrew Bible in the University of Oregon’s Harold Schnitzer Family Program in Judaic Studies. He received his Ph.D. from Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, where he studied the Bible and its ancient Near Eastern context. His research focuses on negative depictions of deities in biblical and cognate texts. – See more at: http://www.ojlife.com/content/god%E2%80%99s-goodness-view-hate#sthash.Ee6D3L1T.dpuf
