Award offered for information on killing of 3 gray wolves in Oregon

By Robert Besser

After three endangered gray wolves from the same pack were killed in southern Oregon, a federal agency is offering a $50,000 reward for information.

The three wolves were killed east of Bly in southern Oregon’s Klamath County, which is some 310 miles southeast of Portland.

In a statement, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said that on December 29, the collars from two gray wolves sent a mortality signal, adding that state wildlife officials responded and found three dead wolves, two with collars and one without a collar.

The collared wolves were an adult breeding female and a juvenile from the Gearhart Mountain Pack, while the other was also a juvenile.

The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife said it was aware of seven wolves remaining in the pack, including a breeding male.

The department did not confirm how the wolves died.

Under the Endangered Species Act, gray wolves are protected by federal law, and it is illegal to hurt or kill them.

Gray wolves are listed as endangered in the western two-thirds of Oregon.
