SHINE women’s concert @ Ahavat Achim Synagogue
Aug 2 @ 7:30 pm

Join the women of SHINE and experience music and song from the hills of Tzfat. Come together for an evening of music and singing. Music is the window to the soul. Tziona can help you enter through that window and access areas that you never visited.

“I use my music as a form of prayer. Music and song are heart-opening tools that bring out what is inside and help move it higher.” – Tziona Achishena

This event is sponsored by SHINE, The Portland Kollel, and Congregation Ahavath Achim

Tziona Achishena explores sonic healing with her four-octave vocal range, soulful original melodies, and unique arrangements. Her range of styles is vast, from quiet, simple blues/folk, to hypnotic Hebrew chants, to Kabbalist Pop. Whatever the style, Tziona’s unique sound comes through, taking the listener on a profoundly personal tour of her heart and soul, with the promise of awakening, heart opening, relaxation, and catharsis in turns. Her English works are based on her own poetry, while she draws on the ancient words of the Jewish spiritual traditions for her Hebrew prayers. Layering voices and multiple instruments such as piano, guitar, flute, cello, harmonium, and hand drums, Tziona creates soundscapes that hold the space for her vocals to fly. Tziona has collaborated with such sonic geniuses as Wings of an Angel, James LeBrecht, Paul Godwin, Chava Rachel Saban, and Talia Zak. She lives in Israel, where she composes and records in her home studio, as well as teaching her unique approach to musical creativity and working as a chaplain. Improvisation and the living concept of a “new song” born at the moment is the essence of her creative path.

14TH ANNUAL SHOC WALK & RUN @ Latus Motors Harley-Davidson
Aug 4 @ 7:30 am – 10:30 am

:

Saturday, August 4, the SHOC Foundation will kick off its 14th Annual SHOC Walk & Run at Latus Motors Harley-Davidson in support of ovarian and gynecologic cancer research.

The Sherie Hildreth Ovarian Cancer (SHOC) Foundation is a 100% volunteer-operated 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. Dedicated to finding a cure, the Foundation has donated $900,000 for ovarian and gynecologic cancer research at the Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) Knight Cancer Institute. You can read about previous research funded by SHOC in this Oregon Jewish Life 2016 article.

Sherie Hildreth lost her life in 2009 after a five-year battle with ovarian cancer, but her legacy lives on. The SHOC Walk & Run commemorates and celebrates her courageous fight, her will to support women living with gynecologic cancers, her tenacity to raise awareness of these diseases, and her relentless pursuit to raise the funds necessary to develop an early detection screening, or even better, a cure.

Participants will enjoy a beautiful 5K/10K walk or run or a 1-mile family walk alongside the Clackamas River and throughout the city of Gladstone. A warm pancake and griddle breakfast will welcome back participants as they return from the course. Gynecologic cancer survivors may indulge in an exclusive sit-down breakfast at their leisure beginning at 8:30am.

Other attractions include massage, music, the Last Regiment of Syncopated Drummers, face painting, vendors, the Rose City Rollers and the Rose City Hogs.

The event will begin at 7:30 am with an opening ceremony facilitated by KATU’s Rhonda Shelby, and the horn will sound at 8 am to begin the walk and run. Online registration is open until July 31, and on-site registration will be available Friday, Aug. 3 and the morning of the event, Aug. 4. Early bird pricing is available until July 15 and discounted pricing is available for groups of four or more. All details, including registration, sponsorship and volunteer opportunities are available online at www.shocfoundation.org.

CBI Preschool Activity Supply Sale @ Congregation Beth Israel
Aug 5 @ 9:00 am – 2:00 pm

As Beth Israel education staff go through some of our supplies from the preschool, we find we have tons of things that are in great condition that we just don’t have a use for anymore. We have things like toys (labeled and in boxes), scooters, tiny furniture and pretend play furniture as well as tons and tons of books! We’ll be having a sale on Sunday, August 5th from 9:00 AM-2:00 PM to unload as much as possible with all proceeds going to our Youth Groups! Prices will be very very low, and super reasonable!

If you have any questions, please reach out to me at Chelsea@bethisrael-pdx.org. Please also feel free to invite any family or friends who could use some toys for their kids!

Thanks!

First Summer Sundays: Free Public Tours of the Oregon Holocaust Memorial @ OREGON HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL
Aug 5 @ 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm

Please join OJMCHE for free public tours of the Oregon Holocaust Memorial.

While the Oregon Holocaust Memorial is open during all park hours, on the first summer Sundays of July 1, Aug, 5, and Sept, 2, knowledgeable OJMCHE docents will be on hand to give tours of the Memorial from 1 to 2pm. Many docents are Holocaust survivors and family members with personal stories to share.

The Memorial was dedicated in 2004 and, as the stewards, OJMCHE works to teach the lessons of the Holocaust, pay homage to those who lost their lives and provide hope that future generations will learn to honor the rights of all people. Each year hundreds of school children tour the Memorial with OJMCHE docents. To schedule a tour for your school or organization call 503-226-3600.

The Oregon Holocaust Memorial is located in Washington Park at the intersection of SW Washington Way & Wright Avenue.
